SURJ is excited to announce a 5-week online course on organizing and campaigns, starting on April 2nd.
Who is this course meant for? This training is designed for folks practicing leadership or will be moving into leadership in SURJ chapters. We are encouraging people who are actively working on organizing campaigns or folks who are interested in helping their chapter shift their work to include and center working on organizing campaigns.
What will the training cover? The training will focus on skills and concepts to help SURJ chapters run and participate in organizing campaigns. Topics will include:
- What is organizing and why do we do it?
- Strategy and power
- Relationship-building and base-building
- What is our place in the movement? How do we lead respectfully and with accountability?
- Sharing this information with our chapters
Dates and times: The training will take place for 5 weeks every Monday evening from 8:00 - 10:00pm EST beginning April 2nd. The training will take place online or over the phone.
Who should join from your chapter and the commitment: Chapters should make a collective decision about who from their group will participate - you should not register without talking with your leadership team/body. Last year, many chapters added this to their leadership team agendas for the month to talk through who would be good fits to attend and the criteria for making that decision together.
We are highly encouraging chapters to send cross-class teams (i.e. people from different class backgrounds), with a priority on working-class and poor folks taking on some level of leadership in the chapter. If you don’t know the class backgrounds of the people in your chapter, this is a great opportunity to begin the conversation. If you need support in having those conversations, please check out SURJ’s page with materials first, and reach out to Erin for materials/support in this conversation.
Each chapter must have two people able to attend each call, and may have up to 5 people in the chapter participate throughout the course of the 5-week training. Each person is allowed to miss up to one session. We make this ask because we’ve found it takes a team to help implement new ideas and practices in a group - it’s not possible for just one of us to move this kind of work. If your chapter is smaller, or just getting off the ground and you are not sure how to get 2 folks from your chapter to attend, please reach out to your chapter coach or to Erin (email below) to talk through the possibilities and registering.
Access: Closed captioning will be available upon request for the training. To make a request for closed captioning or if you have any other access needs, please email firstname.lastname@example.org by March 26th.
Technology: The training will be hosted on a platform called Zoom and will include video and audio. You will be able to participate if you have a phone or a computer. Once you register for the training, you will be sent instructions for how to join. We will spend time at the beginning of our first session going over the technology and how to use it. If this is new technology for you, we’ve got your back!
