To build the powerful base of seven million white people acting as part of a multi-racial majority for racial justice, SURJ is building our membership. Member dues are member-determined, based on the principle of equity — meaning that as a member, you choose the dues amount that is right for you and your family. The suggested minimum is $5/month. On average, members choose $15-25+/month.
SURJ membership dues are determined by each member and their family according to their ability. We know that the base membership of $5/month or $60/year can still be a challenge. No one will be turned away from membership because of financial hardship. SURJ recognizes class disparities and is working to center the leadership of poor and working class people in all of our work. Your gift of any size will renew your membership for another year.
Becoming a member of SURJ is one way you can help build the powerful base of seven million white people showing up for racial justice we all envision and our world needs. SURJ members get to enjoy:

- The chance to be part of building a powerful multi-racial majority to challenge racism in all its forms.
- The opportunity to show up, shoulder to shoulder with millions of other white people taking collective action for racial justice.
- Invitations to leadership development opportunities
- Twice yearly updates
- Support from SURJ staff to meaningfully participate in campaigns and projects
- Connections to our extensive network of chapters, affiliates and local leaders (100+ chapters and affiliates and growing!)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Would you prefer a one-time gift or a monthly donation?
We would love a monthly donation. Our monthly donors are so helpful in providing the long-term, consistent support that allows us to plan long-term, spend less time following-up with donors to renew, and vision big.
If I can't afford the minimum of $5/month or $60/year, can I still become a member?
Yes, we want everyone to be a member and we know that the base membership fees can be a challenge. No one will be turned away from membership because of financial hardship. SURJ Action recognizes class disparities and is working to center the leadership of poor and working class people in all of our work. Your gift of any size will renew your membership for another year.
What if I really just want to give a one-time gift?
You can. If you give a one-time gift of $60 or more, that also can count as a membership.
How did you come up with $5/month or more?
We looked at successful membership programs from several community organizing groups working with poor and working class people, and talked with several organizers who have done work mobilizing a primarily white working-class membership base. Examples we looked at included New York Communities for Change, several groups in Oregon where membership dues are roughly equivalent to two hours wages per month, the Vermont Workers Center, and to historical examples like the United Farm Workers organizing in the 60’s, whose membership dues would be around $27/month if adjusted for inflation.
We wanted to choose a sliding scale for membership that would be honor all of our belief in the importance of SURJ and our work together for racial justice, while also being accessible. As long-time organizer Kamau Marcharia said, "Poor people have always paid for our own revolutions".
How do I renew my membership?
All monthly donors will have their membership automatically renewed as long as their monthly donation is active. All other donors (who aren’t giving monthly) will be asked to renew their membership with a qualifying donation ($60 or more) after the beginning of the following year.
If I give a one-time donation, will I be reminded to renew my membership?
Yes, we will send you an email a month before your membership will expire, reminding you to renew.
I’m part of a SURJ chapter and/or want to ask others to join SURJ. How should I do that?
Do you have any guidance on how much I should donate?
An amount that honors your belief in and commitment to SURJ and our mission, helps you reach any goals you have around giving, and makes sense financially. If you have more, please consider giving more. We depend on our supporters giving above the minimum membership amount in order to sustain SURJ, meet our budget, and keep the organization going. If you are interested in our major donor program, for people who can give $1,000 or more, please contact Kristen Brock-Petroshius.
