3 anti-immigrant ballot measures are working their way to the November 2016 Oregon ballot. Petition circulation is expected to start soon. The legislator who is sponsoring all 3 measures, Rep. Mike Nearman of Independence, will speak on Thursday, April 28 at the Corvallis library as part of a League of Women Voters forum.
To raise awareness, Corvallis SURJ is organizing a silent protest. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. outside the library on April 28, we will hand out "Decline to Sign" stickers (alerting people not to sign the petitions). We ask that people wearing these stickers congregate in the library meeting room by 7:20 pm.
The ballot measures are:
#40 - English Will Be the Official Language in Oregon. "…No law, ordinance, decree, program, or policy of this State or any of its subdivisions shall require the use of any language other than English…" (with exceptions, including permission to teach other languages in schools).
#51 -- Voters Must Prove Citizenship to Vote. Constitutional amendment. Expected to have the effect of eliminating community-based voter registration drives. To register to vote, people will have to show proof of citizenship to a state or county authority.
#52 -- Oregon Employment "Protection" Act. Requires most businesses in Oregon to run every current and future employee's documents through the flawed federal E-Verify program.
These are one layperson's interpretations of the measures.
