Write Their Names: July 21 Collective Action for Justice

"FREE FROM VIOLENCE. FREE FROM OPPRESSION. FREE TO BE OUR FULL SELVES. FREE TO LOVE. FREEDOM NOW.

If you've been marching on the streets or been on the sidelines, this is your opportunity to join the movement for justice to make sure today is different than yesterday. We can create a future where Black children live in peace and possibility, not under a police state.

We will honor those we've lost by fighting for the world we can build together, the world we know is possible, the world we deserve."
--Movement for Black Lives

In response to recent and ongoing police violence towards Black people in the United States as well as to the racial disparities in policing and incarceration in Vermont, a multiracial community is organizing a local nonviolent event in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives Collective Action for Justice on Thursday July 21st. This group includes members of VT Black Lives Matter, VT People of Color Caucus, VT Partnership for Fairness and Diversity, VT Workers Center, Brattleboro Solidarity, Lost River Racial Justice, and Green Mountain Crossroads.

We will be creating action teams to accomplish the tasks listed below. To join an action team, please meet at Pliny Park (corner of High St. and Main St.) from 5:00 - 5:30pm. Action teams will spread out around town from 5:30 - 7:00pm. Action tasks:

+ Writing the names of the 138 Black people killed by police so far in 2016 in chalk on the sidewalks of downtown Brattleboro, and engaging folks on the sidewalks and streets.

+ Collecting signatures for letters to be sent to elected Vermont officials to demand an increase in people of color and community oversight of Vermont Police Academy curriculum and allocating funds for implicit bias training.

+ Mobilizing Brattleboro community members to engage in a Community Conversation on Policing on Wednesday, July 27th. Come show visible support of Black Lives Matter.
